Heretofore, continuous casting of molten metal has been accomplished by pouring the molten metal into a continuous casting mold formed by a pattern of traveling water cooled metal solidifying against a water cooled mold surface. The mold is lined with solidified metal on the mold surface to ensure solidification of the poured molten metal. In order to maintain the molten metal stream in a flowing condition within the continuous casting mold, a porous mold which is water cooled on its interior surface is utilized. The porosity of the water cooled mold assures that the molten metal stream is fluidized as it flows downwardly and forwardly through the mold.
In order to lower the casting cost of continuously cast metal, it is desirable to continuously cast molten metal at as high of a throughput as is economically feasibile. Heretofore, it has not been possible to achieve maximum casting throughput or efficiency due to an inability to minimize the air content within the continuous casting mold which prevents maximum metal flow into the mold.
Heretofore, when casting of molten metal occurs in high speed continuous casting systems in which molten metal is poured into a traveling continuous casting mold, the metal impinges directly against the solidified metal mold surface. The casting surface is cooled such that metal which contacts this cooling surface solidifies from the heat of the metal to the extent that the contacting metal is substantially solidified before it is fully cooled on the mold surface. When casting occurs in such a continuous casting system, as the molten metal stream contacts the mold surface, the solidified metal is molten as a result of the heat released in solidifying the contacting metal.
