The term CAD is actually a bit misleading, because CAD stands for computer-aided design. In the traditional sense of CAD, a computer runs an application that can manipulate various types of objects in two or three dimensions and create or modify two- and three-dimensional drawings.

The early origins of CAD can be traced back to the early 1970s, when the first software applications were developed for creating charts and graphs in the so-called time-sharing mode, where multiple users can access a shared mainframe computer. The term CAD itself began in the early 1980s, when users started using personal computers, where each person had their own computer, and the first CAD programs began appearing.

As personal computers became more widely used, three-dimensional CAD was born. At first, it was possible to use a mouse and then create and edit two-dimensional (2D) drawings, but the additional functionality needed to do solid modeling was not available. Solid modeling means using a computer to design three-dimensional objects (e.g., drawing tools for creating and editing three-dimensional objects), such as furniture, vehicles, or buildings.

This first generation of CAD programs was “black-box” programs; you could see what you were drawing, but you had no idea what the program was doing. Then, in the early 1990s, tools began appearing that allowed CAD users to do direct modeling (DIM), which meant being able to view the 3D model directly on the computer screen. Now CAD programs have evolved to include more features and better software tools, and software vendors are constantly working on new technologies and features that will allow CAD users to work faster, easier, and smarter.


AutoCAD came to be by combining the works of several individuals. The first version of AutoCAD was designed by William Forsyth, who joined Autodesk in 1985. AutoCAD LT 2017 has improved speed, automation, and accessibility compared to the previous edition.

Compatible with larger file sizes. All model data, including detailed line work, has been compressed to conserve storage space, and to increase file-transfer performance
Simple, interactive object design with enhanced handles and connections
Easier command-line use
Integrated Accessibility Settings tool, which gives AutoCAD users a way to help those with visual impairments. AutoCAD LT can make its changes to drawings more accessible to those who cannot use a computer keyboard.
Graphics panel options such as black and white, color, and grayscale, to make them easier to read
Appears to offer speed improvements and better overall performance than AutoCAD 2010, based on reports and comments

Clone command-line tool to quickly create multiple copies of models with similar properties
Integrated 3D Objects tool to create and insert 3D objects and surfaces in model
Lazy Load, a new method of moving and displaying objects which has dramatically improved performance.

Auto-fitting of dimensioning constraints to models
