In this Photoshop tutorial, we will teach you to work with a single layer with various effects, so that you’ll have a basic knowledge of how to work with layers in Photoshop. You’ll learn how to create different effects like blurring, embossing, and more.

Steps

Create a new document in Photoshop, which will serve as your base image. The name of this document will be “base.psd.”

You can do this in the usual way, by creating a new document in Photoshop, but make sure the background is white, and the opacity is set to 100%.

It’s also important that you use a new file. If you open a file that hasn’t been saved in Photoshop, the import settings won’t be correct.

Add a new layer above your image. In this first step, we’ll be working with a single layer. You will be able to see the layer at this point, but there won’t be any graphics on it.

Click on your “base.psd” document to load it into Photoshop. This can be done by clicking File > Open, or pressing Shift + O, and then using the browse button to find “base.psd.”

Select the layer above the base image, if it isn’t already selected, by holding down the Shift key as you click on the layer in the Layers palette.

Open the Smart Radius dropdown, and choose the number “4.” This will set the Smart Radius to 4 pixels.

Smart Radius will automatically adjust the blur automatically as you open the Radius from 0 to 8, where 8 is the maximum.

Smart Radius also works with other variables as well, such as the brush size, layer opacity, and more. You can find out more about Smart Radius in the Layer Blur tutorial.

Open the Styles palette by pressing Shift + Alt + Ctrl + S.

Select the Blur…Blur: Gaussian in the styles palette.

Change the Foreground color to Black or White, and set the Blend to Normal.

Click on the layer mask button in the Layers palette to make it visible.

Using the Pencil tool, draw an oval on the mask area. The oval should be approximately the size of the layer.

If you’re going to spend $80 on a book and it’s going to be one that brings up so much baggage and name-calling, you should really know what you’re getting yourself into. I could have guessed that that was going to be the case based on certain reviews I’ve read, but no one ever bothered to tell me. In fact, the book itself could not have hinted at it any more strongly.

Harold Bloom’s The American Religious Renaissance is one of the most trite, plodding, soul-searching, schmaltzy, pretentious, ill-written, disingenuous, and tone-deaf books to come out of the publishing world since Oprah made it chic. There, I’ve said it. Now I just have to live with the guilt.

Bloom started out with the mindset that he wanted to write a book that would clear up so many misconceptions about the country’s history of religion. In fact, he said he wanted to write a book that “acknowledges the presence of the religious imagination in the world of American literature” (pg. 3), no doubt expecting to be praised for his honesty and boldness. He even managed to quote from one of his own books, Unheroic America (pg. 91):

Americans have a deep well of religiosity to draw on, and not just the Puritans, the Baptists, the Methodists, and the Shakers, but the religions of the Middle Passage – Islam, African Christianity, and the African-American religions of Judaism and Islam.

Sadly, I’m sure he expected that to be read with the same appreciation for how deep and important it was for America to be founded by a member of the tribe of Abraham, especially one of the party of Joseph, and not as a terrible insult to those of us who find that idea both insulting and disgusting.

He tosses around terms like Old Testament, spirituality, and the sacred quite a bit, as though these were something you can put in your grocery bag and take home and plug in at any time. Both of those last two terms strike me as being anachronistic and untrue. The first is “Old Testament” because it was only written as late as the first century BC, and the other is just a little too much like “Christian” to be accepted by people who would otherwise have liked to see this book. The book also goes out of its way to reveal very profound and important things about the New Testament

Social media users are often curious about the most popular hashtags and how they appear in Twitter. For many, they prefer to search for terms with hashtags such as #Snowden and #NSA. As a result, they can easily find out what are the most common posts that are posted on Twitter.

Another way of tracking Twitter activity is to set up an account on Twitter analytics. Twitter analytics lets you track the number of followers and tweets a user has. It also provides analytics from their messages to the followers.

Twitter is also the most used social media platform for reaching out to media. An analysis showed that in 2012, about 1.5% of social media users used Twitter to reach out to the media.

Twitter also lets you interact with the world via the status messages that you are allowed to send via the platform. You are allowed to share thoughts, ideas, and interests in 140 characters. The tweets are also announced via the Twitter status page, where you can read tweets sent via Twitter, giving you a firsthand view of what’s happening all over the world at any moment in time.

Twitter popularity can be determined from user engagement or number of followers. If you have good amount of followers, the chances are that you will get tweeted. Twitter also has a great business advantage as the platform is directly and easily linked with various business options available on the market. So, brands and businesses have the chance to reach a large customer base, and can be directly connected to them.
