Risk stratification for reoperation after ventriculomegaly-associated shunt surgery.
The purpose of this study was to identify risk factors that predict reoperation among patients undergoing ventriculomegaly-associated shunt surgery and to develop a predictive reoperation risk model for this population. A retrospective chart review was performed for all patients undergoing ventriculomegaly-associated shunt surgery between 2000 and 2005. Outcomes were compared between patients who had been reoperated and patients who had not, and reoperation rate was regressed with multiple predictors using logistic regression. Eighty-two patients (mean age, 10.6 years; range, 1.4-17.8 years) were identified. Shunt surgery was performed because of hydrocephalus (n = 53; 65%), overgrowth of the brain-stem (n = 8; 10%), and at ventriculomegaly (n = 23; 28%). From among these 82 patients, 67 (81.7%) had a history of shunt failure and 85 (100%) had hydrocephalus as the indication for shunt surgery. The mean time to reoperation from the initial shunt surgery was 54.4 months, and the mean follow-up from reoperation was 24.7 months. Thirteen (15.9%) patients required reoperation. The risk of reoperation increased with age at initial shunt surgery (age >13 years; odds ratio [OR], 5.7; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.5-22.2), no family history of hydrocephalus (OR, 5.4; 95% CI, 1.5-19.5), and primary shunt surgery at a local hospital (OR, 3.3; 95% CI, 1.0-10.9). An age-adjusted, shunt-failure-free, family history-free, and localized-hospital-shunt-surgery risk model had a sensitivity of 0.70 (95% CI, 0.53-0.82) and a specificity of 0.86 (95% CI, 0.79-0.92) for predicting reoperation. I’ve always wondered how an actual programmer could write tests… It seems like if you write enough code, eventually it gets tested. But then what if you’re a noob who started programming and you wrote “tests” in your first program? You may have written a bunch of code, but do you have to have a degree or something to be a “tester” (as some call them)?

A test is a piece of executable code that acts as a “black box” in which the test subject may be placed.
Therefore, a tester in our context simply tests something else:

the subject itself,
its relations with other subjects (there can even be seperated control and observable subjects),
its relations with the environment it’s supposed to work in.

So a test may be made by any kind of code.
If you use a programming language like C++ or Python, you can write such tests with the help of code generators like GoogleTest.
By the way, writing unit test for “programming code” may already be considered “writing code”.
For example, in C++ you can write a function that returns a double (i.e. a numerical value) and write a test which uses that function. There is no need to write “code” just to test it.

There are tons of test frameworks in C++. So if you have a CS background, you’ll be used to writing tests.

We can define a test as a validation method that shows whether a portion of code is executing correctly or not. This needs not necessarily be a test written in a language which takes some efforts to develop. Even if you write one line of code to show that that function is running properly, it can be considered as a “test”.
