The present invention relates to integrated circuit memory devices, and more particularly to memory devices which incorporate a hierarchical data path for access to data in a cache memory.
2. Description of the Prior Art
Microprocessors can execute instructions rapidly and require little power. However, the associated memory is typically large and consumes significant power. Computer systems often contain several levels of cache memories between the microprocessor and the main system memory (RAM). The primary functions of cache memories are to provide local storage close to the microprocessor and to act as a buffer between the processor and the main system memory.
Cache memories are essentially small copies of the main memory locations accessed. Cache memories have a much shorter access time than the main system memory.
